Cooling a Multi-Purpose Ice Skating Rink
Precision Cooling for Year-Round Ice Creates Optimal Conditions for Every Skater
Overview:
In the highly specialized field of ice sports and recreational activities, maintaining the perfect ice surface is critical. ADEAREST provided a complete solution for a multi-purpose ice skating rink, including a sophisticated refrigeration system and essential rink components. The system was designed to meet the various ice requirements for activities such as figure skating, curling, ice hockey, and ice skating for the general public.
Technical Overview:
At the core of this project was the advanced refrigeration system, designed to deliver precise control over both ice temperature and thickness. The Ammonia/Glycol system controls the ice temperature across a 1,800 sqm surface, adjusting temperatures from -6oC for hockey to -2oC for figure skating. We installed goalposts, dasher boards, and protective glass featuring acrylic plastic sheets, along with leveling machines and ice-scraping equipment. This ensured a seamless and safe environment, capable of transitioning quickly between various sporting events.
During the commissioning phase, rigorous pressure and leak testing were conducted to ensure the system's integrity, while gradual cooling ensured the ice pad remained level without cracking.
Ice Building Process:
Building the ice surface involved detailed planning and execution. The sand base was saturated with water before applying a 6-7mm layer of hot water (+50oC) to create a durable foundation. After solidifying this base layer, we painted the rink white for enhanced visibility. An additional 15mm layer of clear ice was then added to achieve a final thickness of 50mm. The surface was then smoothed with a resurfacing machine to ensure a pristine, level finish.
Outcome:
The completed rink now accommodates a range of activities with consistent, durable ice that meets the strict standards of both athletes and casual skaters. The refrigeration system allows for rapid adjustments in ice temperature, ensuring optimal conditions for figure skating, ice hockey, and general skating activities. Additionally, the safety features and ice maintenance tools ensure a secure, professional-grade facility.
